This catalog accompanies the groundbreaking exhibition, Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon, the first New York museum retrospective of Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized by Japan Society Gallery in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA), the exhibition traces the artist’s remarkable career with particular attention to the transformative years he spent in New York City, from 1955 to 1975. Inokuma’s abstract paintings from his solo exhibitions held at the Willard Gallery, newly discovered works in the Hirose Family Collection, and those in the Japan Society Collection are reproduced for the first time in this publication along with Inokuma’s photographs of Manhattan and his avant-garde artist friends: Jasper Johns, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Alexander Calder, Cy Twombly, David Smith, Isamu Noguchi, Yoko Ono, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and others. By illuminating Inokuma’s little-known role in postwar American art history, Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon brings new insights into New York City’s mid-20th-century art world, illuminating its vibrant international social scene.
